Next up is Helen Herron Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft. Helen Louise Herron was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 2nd, 1861. She was the fourth child of Judge John Williamson Herron. From the time she was a little girl, she was always referred to as Nellie. From 1866 to 1879, Nellie attended a private school taught by Miss Nourse. Upon completion she studied music at the University of Cincinnati. One interesting incident from her younger years, was when she stayed at the White House for President and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes' 25th wedding anniversary celebration. Unbeknownst to her, she would be living there 32 years later. While at the White House her younger sister, Lucy, was baptized and named for Mrs. Hayes. In 1879, Nellie met William Howard Taft at a bobsledding party. She described the tall lawyer as "that adorable Will Taft". The two had many intellectual interests in common and soon became friends. They started going together regularly in 1882 and were engaged in May of 1885. The two were married at Nellie's home in Cincinnati on June 19, 1886. The couple spent one day in New York City and four days in Sea Bright, New Jersey before leaving for a three month-long tour of Europe. After returning from their honeymoon, Will and Nellie settled into life in Cincinnati. William adored his wife. He described her as "a treasure, self contained, independent, and of unusual application." He joked that the only way they would reach Washington in any official capacity was when she became Secretary of the Treasury! Nellie supported her husband's judiciary career as he moved from state judge, Solicitor General of the United States, and federal circuit judge. Their first child, Robert, was born in 1889. Two more children, Helen and Charles, followed in the next several years. In 1900, William agreed to take charge of the American civil government in the Philippines. Always up to a challenge, Helen undertook the move to this strange area with great delight. She enjoyed their life there as well as travel to China, Japan, and the Vatican for her husband's special assignments. More travel came when William became Secretary of War in 1904. These travels sparked a wide interest in politics and a cosmopolitain circle of friends in Helen. When William was elected president in 1908, she welcomed the opportunity with relish. While always interested in politics, she mostly focused on the social aspects of her role as First Lady. She would entertain guests three days a week in the Red Room, and introduced the White House practice of after-state dinner music. Only two months after the inauguration, she suffered a stroke that impaired her speech, right arm, and leg. However, with her characteristic determination, she carried on her duties with the help of her four sisters until she recovered. Her most lasting accomplishment as First Lady came in 1912 when she planted 3,200 Japanese cherry trees around the Capitol and the Tidal Basin. She personally planted the first two with the help of the Japanese Ambassador's wife in a ceremony on March 27th. These trees can still be seen around Washington D.C. today. Helen was always very fashionably dressed. Her gown for her husband's Inaugural Ball, made by the Frances Smith Company, was made of white silk chiffon with floral embroidery in metallic thread and trimmed with rhinestones and beads. Helen accomplished many firsts in her time as First Lady-she was the first First Lady to ride in her husband's Inauguration Parade, the first to own and drive a car, first to support women's suffrage, first to publish her memoirs (Recollections of Full Years), and first to successfully lobby for safety standards in federal workplaces. After William lost re-election in 1912, the two moved back to Cincinnati where William began teaching law. During the next several years, Nellie worked on her memoirs and provided support for the American Red Cross during WWI. In 1921, William was appointed to the Supreme Court and the couple moved back to Washington. Helen settled back into her social life with enthusiasm. Mrs. Taft was the only woman to have been both First Lady and the wife of a Supreme Court Justice. Helen was widowed upon the death of her husband in 1930. She stayed in Washington and continued to carry on her social life and support many charities and causes. Helen Herron Taft died at her home in Washington on May 22, 1943 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband. I hope y'all have been enjoying this series as much as I have! It has been fascinating to study the lives of these remarkable ladies!
