We think of the short fringed or sequined dresses, the long beaded necklaces, headbands etc. However, there was much more to the fashion of the 1920s than just that basic look. At the beginning of the decade, the styles still had some elements left from the 1910s. Long ankle length dresses, wide brimmed hats, and lace and ruffles were still very much in vogue. (Older women continued to prefer this style throughout the decade) As the decade progressed, hem lengths began to come up and dresses generally became looser and "waistless". For housedresses and work wear, most women wore cotton dresses in gingham, plaid, solids, or stripes. Afternoon or party dresses, were also simple but were generally made of higher quality material in a large variety of plaids, solids, stripes, and florals. Travel in the 1920s was still a very hot, dirty, and dusty affair. Women liked to wear sturdy suits, knitwear, and coats to keep as clean and unwrinkled as possible. One of my absolute favorite things about 1920s style, are the coats!! I just love the long, fur trimmed "cocoon" style! Evening dresses tended to be knee length or longer and made of silk, chiffon, taffetta, or light velvet. The 1920s were a truly fascinating time in the history of fashion! Although I've definitely not been able to show you every aspect of the decade's fashions, I hope you have enjoyed this little peek!
