On April 12th, 1945, Harry S Truman ascended to the Presidency of the United States upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Americans were worried about this sudden change. Many Americans could not remember a time when FDR hadn't been president. Being the only president to serve four terms, FDR had been the president for almost all of many young American's lives. He had been the man who helped them through the Depression years and had led his nation all throughout this world war. Americans felt a fierce loyalty to him, even if they didn't agree with all of his political policies. His sudden death came as a terrible shock to everyone. Although he had had polio for years, almost no one expected he would die so soon. Having their Commander in Chief die in the midst of such a terrible war was very alarming to most Americans. No one really knew all that much about this new president, Harry S Truman. Some knew about his heroism in the First World War as the commander of the 129th Field Artillery, but they still wondered if he really had the courage and experience to lead this nation in the midst of such a violent war. Around this time, newspapers across the country began doing articles on the new President to help educate Americans about this change in leaders. This particular newspaper page is from the Cincinnati Inquirer and is dated April 29th, 1945. The paper shows many fascinating photos of the President's life including photos of him as a child, a First Lieutenant, Senate candidate, and as running mate for Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also included are photos of him with family, FDR, and his opponent for the Vice Presidency in 1944. On the reverse side, are many awesome vintage advertisements!! ( Anybody else just love vintage ads?? :D)
There are also two interesting articles on American soldiers in China and the building of Idlewild airport. (which was later renamed the John F. Kennedy International Airport.) The newspaper is still in wonderful condition for its age and shows no signs of tears or stains. This is truly a fascinating piece of history and would make a wonderful addition to your collection! We think of the short fringed or sequined dresses, the long beaded necklaces, headbands etc. However, there was much more to the fashion of the 1920s than just that basic look. At the beginning of the decade, the styles still had some elements left from the 1910s. Long ankle length dresses, wide brimmed hats, and lace and ruffles were still very much in vogue. (Older women continued to prefer this style throughout the decade) As the decade progressed, hem lengths began to come up and dresses generally became looser and "waistless". For housedresses and work wear, most women wore cotton dresses in gingham, plaid, solids, or stripes. Afternoon or party dresses, were also simple but were generally made of higher quality material in a large variety of plaids, solids, stripes, and florals. Travel in the 1920s was still a very hot, dirty, and dusty affair. Women liked to wear sturdy suits, knitwear, and coats to keep as clean and unwrinkled as possible. One of my absolute favorite things about 1920s style, are the coats!! I just love the long, fur trimmed "cocoon" style! Evening dresses tended to be knee length or longer and made of silk, chiffon, taffetta, or light velvet. The 1920s were a truly fascinating time in the history of fashion! Although I've definitely not been able to show you every aspect of the decade's fashions, I hope you have enjoyed this little peek!
Have a lovely day! -Emma Do you enjoy 1920s fashion? What is your favorite part? Drop a comment below- I'd love to hear from you! Following the first use of the atomic bomb in 1945, the world was thrown into a captivating fear of what such a weapon could do if found in the hands of an enemy. Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, this was a very present reality among many Americans. Most states and cities published a book or pamphlet on how to react in the event of an atomic detonation. This book was published by the Ohio Valley Civil Defense Authority as a guide for the citizens of Cincinnati and the surrounding area. This book gives clear directions on how to evacuate (including detailed maps with various evacuation routes layed out), places to hide if evacuation is impossible, and tips on how and where to reconnect with your family in the aftermath. This book is a fascinating read and provides an intriguing insight on America in the Atomic Age!

Here you will find updates from our shop, notifications of shop sales, vintage fashion inspiration, and loads of vintage photos from the 1910s-60s.
The Lovely Shoppe Co. was started in early 2018 as a handmade jewelry shop. I soon realized the immense amount of competition in the jewelry industry on Etsy. After making very few sales, I began to think about closing shop. Meanwhile, one day as I was cleaning out a closet, I came across an old plaid skirt that I hadn't worn in a long time. As I was looking it over, my attention was suddenly caught by the tag. It was one of those old woven types, but what caught my attention even more was the size: Women's Size 7. Although definitely not totally obscure, most modern womens clothes skip from size 6 to 8 and rarely use size 7. I began wondering if the skirt could be vintage. The style of the skirt reminded me of the early 1960s Collegiate look. After researching for a while, I discovered to my delight that the skirt was most likely from the late 50s or early 60s!! Having seen other vintage shops on Etsy selling similar things, I decided to list the skirt. Several weeks later, I came across more vintage items and began listing them in my shop. My first vintage sale was a 1940s white stole that was sold in April of 2019. Ever since then I have been selling a wide variety of vintage clothing, accessories, books, magazines, postcards, games, cameras, and more. It's been wonderful and it has been exciting to connect with so many amazing customers as a result! Moral of the story: good things happen when you clean your closet!! :) On this blog, I hope to share many things with you including: -What's new in the shop -Notifiactions of shop sales -Vintage Fashion Inspiration -Vintage Book/Movie/TV Show Reviews -Fun vintage photos -My vintage research projects ... and lots more!
